Industrial Masking and Filament Tape

Industrial Masking and Filament Tape

Industrial masking tape and filament tape for surface protection, paint masking, bundling, and reinforcement applications. Masking tape is manufactured from crepe paper backing with rubber-based or silicone adhesive, available in temperature ratings from standard (140F) to high-temperature (400F+). Filament tape is constructed from polypropylene or polyester film reinforced with fiberglass filaments, delivering tensile strengths from 100 to 680 lbs per inch. Both tape types are available in widths from 1/4 to 3+ inches.

Masking Tape

Industrial masking tape is manufactured from crepe paper backing coated with pressure-sensitive adhesive. The crepe paper backing conforms to irregular surfaces and curved geometries, making it the standard choice for paint masking, surface protection, and temporary holding applications. Masking tape is designed for clean removal without adhesive residue when removed within the recommended application period.

Masking Tape Temperature Grades

  • Standard grade (up to 140F) uses natural rubber adhesive for general-purpose masking, bundling, labeling, and holding applications at room temperature. Suitable for most indoor masking and surface protection tasks.
  • Medium-temperature grade (up to 176-230F) is designed for automotive refinishing, light industrial painting, and baking operations where moderate heat exposure occurs during paint curing.
  • High-temperature grade (up to 400F+) uses silicone-based adhesive for powder coating, high-temperature paint curing, and industrial processes where the tape must withstand extended heat exposure without adhesive transfer or backing degradation. Polyester and polyimide film tapes are also available for the highest temperature applications.

Filament Tape

Filament tape (also called strapping tape) is a reinforced pressure-sensitive tape constructed from a polypropylene or polyester film backing with continuous fiberglass filaments embedded in the adhesive layer. The fiberglass reinforcement provides high tensile strength with minimal elongation (3-6%), making filament tape resistant to splitting, breaking, or stretching under load. Standard filament tape uses uni-directional (lengthwise) filaments, while bi-directional (cross-weave) filament tape adds lateral strength.

Filament Tape Strength Grades

  • Light-duty (100-110 lbs/inch) for general bundling, carton reinforcement, and lightweight strapping.
  • Medium-duty (148-170 lbs/inch) for palletizing, appliance bundling, and securing moderate loads.
  • Heavy-duty (300 lbs/inch) for heavy bundling, pipe strapping, and industrial reinforcement.
  • Ultra-heavy-duty (680 lbs/inch) for the most demanding strapping and reinforcement applications.

Adhesive Types

  • Natural rubber adhesive provides strong initial tack and bonding to most surfaces at room temperature. Standard for general-purpose masking and filament tape.
  • Synthetic rubber adhesive offers improved moisture and solvent resistance for filament tape used in humid or chemical environments.
  • Silicone adhesive provides clean release and no residue at high temperatures. Used on high-temperature masking tape and specialty film tapes.

Water Activated Paper Tape

Water-activated paper tape (gummed tape) for tamper-evident carton sealing. Manufactured from kraft paper with a starch-based adhesive that activates when moistened. Available in reinforced (fiberglass-laminated) and non-reinforced configurations. Widths from 1 to 3 inches with roll lengths from 300 to 600 feet. When activated and applied, the adhesive penetrates corrugated fiber and creates a permanent, fiber-tearing bond that cannot be opened and resealed without visible evidence of tampering. The tape and adhesive are recyclable with corrugated materials.
